Title: Samurai An Illustrated History Author: Mitsuo Kure Publisher: Tuttle Publishing, 2002 ISBN: 0-8048-3287-0 Language: English Illustrations: Color Pictures Other: 192 pages, 31 cm by 24 cm, hardcover Topics:History, Kabuto, Katchū, Menpō, Paintings, Samurai ID: B0302
Nice general samurai overview book with several armors, re-enactors and drawings. The picture on the cover is rather famous as it illustrates that by the time that photography became available, many ‘samurai’ did not know anymore how to put on an armor properly. The sode are reversed…
This is one of the several books that Stephen R. Turnbull has written about Samurai. This one is a very broad one, and in that sense gives a good overview. Only a few armors ate in the book, but many paintings etc.
This is the Dutch translation of The Way of the Samurai (1983) From Richard Storry with pictures of Werner Forman. Includes a limited number of armor pictures. More included in my library as nostalgia.
Beautiful catalog that was published on the occasion of the exhibition Lords of the samurai – the legacy of a daimyo family, organized by the Asian Art Museum and the Eisei-Bunko Hosokawa Collection (Tokyo), in San Francisco, 2009. Besides the famous armors, also many other beautiful items from the collection are in the catalog.
Fabulous exhibition collection of one of the best armor collections outside of Japan. This catalog is from 2011, and as the collection itself (traveling all over the world) is still expanding, it is likely that many pieces of the now enlarged collection are not yet in the catalog.
Superb catalog for what must have been an amazing exhibition in the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Includes more then 20 mostly famous and superb armours.
Very nice catalog published at the occasion of the ‘Art of Samurai: Selections from the Tokyo National Museum’ exhibition in The Bowers Museum in 2009. The exhibition featured 80 superb pieces, nicely illustrated in this catalog.
Title: Robert Winter Oriental Art - A Collection of Fine Japanese Armour and Related Pieces Author: Robert Winter Publisher: Robert Winter, 2008 Language: English Illustrations: Color Pictures Other: 31 cm by 22 cm, hardcover Topics:Abumi, Bagu, Kabuto, Katchū, Menpō, Paintings, Sōmen ID: B0294
Beautiful sales catalog of Robert Winter. Many high end armours, helmets, masks etc.
This is volume 5 of the illustrated catalogs of the National Museum of Japanese History, completely dedicated to their weapons collection. 603 items are illustrated in color, ranging from muromachi haramaki do, katana till western style 19th century pistols. Most pieces are Japanese, but not all. As there are many pieces, the pictures are rather small, but still nice. Beautiful book.
