Very nice publication by Richard Béliveau, written at the occasion of the exhibition “Samurai – The Prestigious Collection of Richard Béliveau”, lavishly illustrated with pieces from his collection. Very nice photography.

Title: Famous Warriors of 16th Century Japan Author: Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi, W. M. Hawley Publisher: Frances Seyssel-Hawley, 1993 ISBN: 0-910704-45-7 Language: English Illustrations: Line Drawings, Woodblock (B&W) Other: 68 pages, 21.5 cm by 13.5 cm, softcover Topics:Katchū, Paintings, Samurai ID: B0156
Small booklet published by W. M. Hawley with some reproductions from Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi’s Ehon Toyotomi Kunkoki. The booklet focusses on some samurai portraits from this famous series, but Hawley published a bigger book with about 600 reproductions.
W. M. Hawley was one of these pioneers who opened up a lot of info to the West. He is famous for his “Japanese Swordsmiths”, but he also made many other (and smaller) books. This is one of them. 850 Japanese Armour Terms is one of several volumes that contain specific terms for a certain subset of Japanese arms, illustrated by mainly line drawings. The only regret is that the kanji are still all hand written. Otherwise fantastic resource.
Nice book that was published during the process of creating the exhibition “Samurai – A Thousand Years of Cults in Culture” in Malmö in 2004. Although the book is more focussed on the Samurai culture as a whole, it is interesting from an armour perspective as some armours from the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography, Kunstkamera (St. Petersburg) are in here.
